Russian Matryoshka dolls are popular all around the world. They consist of handpainted wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside the other. They have no hands (unless painted on) and traditionally the outer layer is a woman. Matryoshka nesting dolls often follow a theme, which can be anything from peasant girls in traditional dresses to fairy tale characters. Their name was a popular name for girls and is believed to be derived from the Latin word for mother or grandmother.
